And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them: "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger". (Luk 2,6-12)

Infant Jesus in the manger. Mary, Joseph and the sheperds adore Him. Let us also adore Christ, the Son of God, in the silence of our soul and from the depth of our heart. Let us ask Mary to make us love Jesus more, and also the gift of poverty of spirit.

May you all have a blessed Christmas!!

Did you know...?
Advent

The Catholic Church has designated the four weeks preceding Christmas as Advent, a time to “prepare the way of the Lord” for His coming as our King and Savior. In addition, the Church teaches that:

when the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating [John the Baptist’s] birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (Catechism, no. 524; original emphasis).

By participating in various time-honored traditions, such as making Jesse trees or putting on a Christmas play at home, Catholic families can engage more fruitfully in the seasons of Advent and Christmas.

that the first American Thanksgiving was actually celebrated when, in St. Augustine, Florida, Spanish settlers offered the Holy Mass and held a feast together with Native Americans on September 8, 1565.

Did you also know that Squanto, the beloved Native American hero who orchestrated Thanksgiving between the Puritan Pilgrims and the Native Americans was a baptized Catholic? Squanto had been captured by a British slaver who then sold him to the Spanish in the Caribbean Islands.  It was there that Squanto befriended a Spanish Franciscan priest, who not only taught Squanto about Catholicism and who baptized him, but who also helped Squanto get to Spain and then later on to a ship back to New England.

There is more still… another “First Thanksgiving” celebration occurred on April 30, 1598 in Texas where Don Juan  de Oñate declared a day of thanksgiving which was commemorated by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Finally…“Thanksgiving” in Greek is Eucharistia. Thus, the Body and Blood of Christ is the true “Thanksgiving Meal”.

"Give thanks in all circumstances
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you"
(Thess. 5:18)

Did you know...?

That the month of October is dedicated to the Blessed Mother and the Rosary and on October 7th, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The
Blessed Virgin Mary was given the title Our Lady of the Rosary since she appeared to St. Dominic and revealed the Rosary devotion.  The place of the revelation was the church of Prouille and the time was 1208. The claim of place and time are most strongly supported by the tradition of the Dominican Order. Pope Leo XIII affirmed over and over the Dominican origin of the Rosary and in a letter to the Bishop of Carcassone (1889), he accepts the tradition of Prouille as the place where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Dominic, revealing this devotion. The tradition that Mary first revealed the Rosary devotion to St. Dominic is supported by 13 popes.

Pope John Paul II declared the Rosary as his favorite prayer, a "prayer for peace and for the family". Read his Apostolic Letter
"Rosarium Virginis Mariae" (Rosary of the Virgin Mary).

·          "Among all the devotions approved by the Church none has been so favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary" (Pope Pius IX).

·          "Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world" (Our Lady of Fatima).

·          "There is no surer means of calling down God's blessings upon the family . . . than the daily recitation of the Rosary" (Pope Pius XII).

·          "We do not hesitate to affirm again publicly that we put great confidence in the Holy Rosary for the healing of evils of our times" (Pope Pius XII).

·          "No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary" (Bishop Hugh Doyle).

·          "The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world" (Pope John XXIII).

·          "The Rosary is the compendium of the entire Gospel" (Pope Paul VI approving a quote from Pope Pius XII).

·          "Meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary . . . can be an excellent preparation for the celebration of those same mysteries in the liturgical actions [i.e. the Mass] and can also become a continuing echo thereof" (Pope Paul VI).

·          "My impression is that the Rosary is of the greatest value not only according to the words of Our Lady at Fatima, but according to the effects of the Rosary one sees throughout history. My impression is that Our Lady wanted to give ordinary people, who might not know how to pray, this simple method of getting closer to God" (Sister Lucia, one of the seers of Fatima).

·          "How beautiful is the family that recites the Rosary every evening" (Pope John Paul II).

Did you know...?

·    Calvin Coolidge is the only president born on July 4th. He was born in Plymouth, Vermont on July 4, 1872.

·    On the other hand, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe all died on the Fourth of July. Incredibly, the first two gentlemen died just hours apart in 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

·    Samuel Adams was the founder of the Sons of Liberty and was the principal organizer of the Boston Tea Party.  As one of the most influential members of the lower house of the Massachusetts legislature (1765-74), he drafted most of the major protest documents, including the Circular Letter (1768) against the Townshend Acts. He also wrote frequently for the press in defense of colonial rights. Because of the intemperate language of his essays for the press (Lt. Gov. Thomas Hutchinson called him the greatest "incendiary" in the empire) and his early advocacy of independence, Adams was regarded as a radical…thank God for this great man!

“It does not take a majority to prevail ... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”  ~ Samuel Adams

·  Prior to July 4th, 1783, the city of Boston commemorated and recognized March 5th, the date of the
Boston Massacre, as their major patriotic holiday.

·    In a letter to his wife, Abigail, John Adam’s wrote the following regarding the passing of the resolution we
would come to know as the Declaration of Independence:

“I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.  It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

The signing of the Declaration was considered, by Great Britain, an act of treason, punishable by death.  Yet 56 brave American men, our Founding Fathers, made the collective decision to put their lives at risk for the greater good of this new nation; showed their courage and great  character, drafted the Declaration, signed it and defied a tyrannical government.

We are proud to offer a variety of Patriotic Gifts, to show our love and respect for this great nation.

…that Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14th (the anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) and that it was first originated by a great American Patriot and schoolteacher, BJ CiGrand, in 1885 as “Flag Birthday”?  Over the next 4 years, CiGrand enthusiastically shared the daywith his students and encouraged the local community to observe June14 as “Flag Birthday” through various newspaper, magazine articles and public addresses.

Soon the Celebration of “Flag Day” began to spread across the country, with Philadelphia holding their first Flag Day celebration, June 14, 1891.  In 1894, the governor of New York directed that the Flag be displayed on all public buildings on June 14th.  At the same time, in Illinois, the first general public school children’s celebration occurred in Chicago, with over 300,000 children gathering in Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln and Washington Parks, each carrying a small flag and singing patriotic songs.

By 1914, adults too, began to participate in patriotic programs in the recognition of the day. On May 30, 1916, by Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson, Flag Day was officially established and on August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress declaring and designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Celebrate by showing your respect and pride in our nation, be sure to fly our Flag high always remembering, those who have died to protect it and all the Freedoms we cherish today.

We at Visions in White, are proud to offer the following, and many more Patriotic Gifts, in honor of Flag Day.
