· On the other hand, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe all died on the Fourth of July. Incredibly, the first two gentlemen died just hours apart in 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. · Samuel Adams was the founder of the Sons of Liberty and was the principal organizer of the Boston Tea Party. As one of the most influential members of the lower house of the Massachusetts legislature (1765-74), he drafted most of the major protest documents, including the Circular Letter (1768) against the Townshend Acts. He also wrote frequently for the press in defense of colonial rights. Because of the intemperate language of his essays for the press (Lt. Gov. Thomas Hutchinson called him the greatest "incendiary" in the empire) and his early advocacy of independence, Adams was regarded as a radical…thank God for this great man! “It does not take a majority to prevail ... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.” ~ Samuel Adams · In a letter to his wife, Abigail, John Adam’s wrote the following regarding the passing of the resolution we “I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” The signing of the Declaration was considered, by Great Britain, an act of treason, punishable by death. Yet 56 brave American men, our Founding Fathers, made the collective decision to put their lives at risk for the greater good of this new nation; showed their courage and great character, drafted the Declaration, signed it and defied a tyrannical government. ...the tradition of celebrating Father's Day as seen today originated in the last century, thanks to a young woman, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. The only daughter of William Jackson Smart (a Civil War veteran) and Ellen Victoria Cheek Smart, Sonora was just 16 when her mother died during childbirth, leaving William to raise Sonora and her five younger brothers alone. Sonora greatly admired her father and recognized how difficult it was for him to raise his children alone. So upon hearing a church sermon about the newly recognized Mother’s Day, Sonora felt very strongly that fatherhood should have recognition as well. Thus, she approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested her own father's birthday of June 5 as the day of honor for fathers. The Alliance, instead, chose the third Sunday in June and proceeded to celebrate the first Father’s Day, June 19, 1910. Soon, the idea of Father's Day was loving embraced and spread across the nation. So much so, that in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson came to Spokane and spoke at special Father's Day services. It wasn’t until 1966, however, that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day nationwide; and finally, in 1972 President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the 3rd Sunday of June each year. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored at the World's Fair in Spokane, Washington in 1974. She died in 1978 at the age of ninety-six, and thanks to her efforts, Father’s receive proper recognition and honor at least one day each year! As such, we too, would like to honor all fathers by offering a special page dedicated to them...Father's Day Gifts Side A - "Dad, I love you!" Did you know...?

Did you know...?

…that Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14th (the anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) and that it was first originated by a great American Patriot and schoolteacher, BJ CiGrand, in 1885 as “Flag Birthday”? Over the next 4 years, CiGrand enthusiastically shared the daywith his students and encouraged the local community to observe June14 as “Flag Birthday” through various newspaper, magazine articles and public addresses.
Soon the Celebration of “Flag Day” began to spread across the country, with Philadelphia holding their first Flag Day celebration, June 14, 1891. In 1894, the governor of New York directed that the Flag be displayed on all public buildings on June 14th. At the same time, in Illinois, the first general public school children’s celebration occurred in Chicago, with over 300,000 children gathering in Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln and Washington Parks, each carrying a small flag and singing patriotic songs.
By 1914, adults too, began to participate in patriotic programs in the recognition of the day. On May 30, 1916, by Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson, Flag Day was officially established and on August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress declaring and designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
Celebrate by showing your respect and pride in our nation, be sure to fly our Flag high always remembering, those who have died to protect it and all the Freedoms we cherish today.
